Reefton – Victoria Conservation Park.
Stephen Manson, Doug Winter, Susy Mannall, Tamsyn Settle, Emma Rudge, Mel Le Compte, Shannon Clark, Iris McGrath, Liz Jarman, Jane McMeeking, Alan Robinson, Sonia Fitchett, Steffan Rolfe plus 37 team members from Red Cross team members from Queenstown, Dunedin, Timaru, Greymouth, Nelson, and Blenheim. Amy Marchello, Sarah Stuart-Black, Carol Ball, Mandy Steel, and 3 fundraised team members. Approximately 400 competitors.
First Aider/Marshal on the Red Cross Resilience Ultra Race in Victoria Conservation Park near Reefton. (4 days, 3 nights).
I assisted on the Red Cross Resilience Ultra Race on the 7th of August 2021 as a Marshal/First Aider on the Pain Killer Track. We started off in Christchurch on Friday the 6th and drove across to Reefton, arriving around lunch-time. We then made our way through to the Race Village, and I drove one of the 4WD vehicles up the 4WD track in the Waitahu Valley to drop a team of four off as far up the track as I could get them. We then had the race briefing to attend in Reefton that night.
On race day, 5 of us started off getting dropped off near the start of the Painkiller Track and started walking to our positions at 6am. Due to varying fitness levels we split into our respective positions, and my team mate and I arrived into position about 15 minutes before the first competitors came through. I scoped out the slip where we were position, and determined where to set up a safety line based on a previous discussion, I had had with the Race Director. The track diversion around the slip got slipperier and muddier through-out the race, and I positioned myself at the bottom of the track/rope to assist anyone struggling. The last of the competitors made their way through our position by ~ 10:30am. We then packed up and made our way back to the road-end to get picked up and taken back to the Race Village. Once we arrived, I was asked to relieve another position close to the village, and stayed there until the race end. Then I organized another driver to head back into the Waitahu Valley to pick up 8 team members who were walking out from Montgomerie Hut.
The following day, there had been snow overnight and both the Lewis Pass and Arthurs Pass were closed. We drove through to Springs Junction to meet up with the EMO who had made his way there. I drove a Red Cross Ute with a 2.5tonne trailer between Reefton and Springs Junction. After that we made our way through to Murchision, Blenheim and then Kaikoura. Due to a Truck which had jack-knifed on the Hundalees road, we spent the night in Kaikoura. I drove the Red Cross Truck (RC04) from Blenheim through to Kaikoura through snow, rain, and high winds.
The following day we made our way from Kaikoura back to Christchurch. I was again driving the Red Cross Ute with Trailer due to potential snow on the road – the road was largely clear, however there was a couple of inches of snow on the roadsides through to Cheviot.
