Trip. (2 hours).
I attended the Warrington Paddle and Picnic at Warrington Beach. We
spent a couple of hours kayak surfing at the Beach, before having a Picnic. It
was the first time I’ve had a successful surf session, and I managed a couple
of rolls in the surf too.

Run. (5 hours).
I did a white-water kayak trip down the Clutha River from the Talla
Burn Put-in to the Beaumont River Take-out, with the Otago Canoe & Kayak Club.
The flow was approximately 750 cumecs – this was the biggest volume river I paddled
yet. There were about 9 paddlers on the trip, and we spent the trip playing in
eddies, small waves, and rapids. The day ended up being quite a long one with
the travel time from Dunedin and back.

Canterbury White Water Club Show Weekend Trip to Murchison. (3
days and 3 nights).
I did a Show Weekend trip with the Canterbury White Water Club in
Murchison. We stayed at Riverside Holiday Park for three nights. On Friday I
did a static session in the morning and a grade two river run on the Buller
with a group of other beginner kayaks. On Saturday I did another grade two
river run with the beginner group, and then had a chilled out afternoon in
Murchison. On Sunday morning I went to a Rolling Session run by the NZ Kayak School
at the Murchison School Pool.

Beginners White Water Kayak Course run by the Canterbury Whitewater
Club. (4 days and 4 three hour pool
sessions.)
I attended a Beginner Kayaking Course
run by the Canterbury Whitewater Club. The course consisted of four 3 hour long
Pool sessions at Wharenui Pool in Riccarton. These session focused mostly on
rolling, with a few other skills thrown in to break things up. There were also
two weekend parts of the course. The first was two days of flatwater paddling
at the Groynes, focusing on paddle stokes and eddy turns on moving water. The
second was based out of Murchison where we stayed at the Riverside Campground,
and spend one day working on skills development at Static sessions on the Buller
River and Mangles River, then on day two we did a rainy day river run down a
short section of the Mangles River.

1 was on the Buller from Doctors Creek to the Matiri road takeout at 30 cumecs.
Day 2 was on the Buller River from Owens to Claybank at 87 cumecs. Day 3 was on
the Buller from Longford to Matiri Road at 50 cumecs. Day 4 was on the Middle
Matakitaki at 55 cumecs.

Kayaking down the Tekapo River from the Dam down to the White Water
Course. (2 hours).
8 of us did a run down the Tekapo
River during a dam release down a grade two section of the river from the dam
down to the White Water Course. The river was running at approximately 16
cumecs, which made for a cruisy river trip – but may have been slightly too
much flow for the White Water course.

Clarence River – Canterbury. Acheron Confluence to Kaikoura.

End of Year Expedition, and Kayak resit. (5 days).
15 cumecs at the Put in, and 75 cumecs at the take-out.
I attended the TPP COE end of
year expedition down the Clarence River. This was also my resit opportunity in
regard to White Water Kayaking. So I was reassessed on grade 2 kayak rolls,
throw bagging (static), and boat barging. The trip was a grade 2 trip, and the
flow was 15 cumecs at the Put In, and 75 cumecs at the take out. There was
minimal rain through-out the trip which made for some quite long days of
paddling. On day one we travelled from Greymouth to Hanmer and then on to the
Acheron Confluence. We put in at the Acheron Confluence and paddled down to
just below Tinline Stream. I kayaked this section of the trip. On day two we
paddled from the campsite below tinline, and then down to Quail Flat. I kayaked
in the morning, and rafted in the afternoon. On day three we paddled down to
below Ravine Hut – again I kayaked in the morning and rafted in the afternoon.
On day four we paddled down to Matai Flat. For this section I rafted in the
morning, and kayaked in the afternoon. Then on the last day we paddled out down
to the takeout at the bridge over the Clarence at the State Highway. I kayaked
the first part of the day, and then rafted the last part. We then packed
everything up, and drove from north of Kaikoura back to Greymouth.

trip down the Arnold River. The purpose of the trip was to practice some
rafting rescue – throw bagging, and safety talks. We split the group in two in
order to make it easier to manage. The river was flowing at approximately 50
cumecs.

Paddled down the Arnold River at
75 cumecs, Grade 2. The run was late in the day (started at 2, finished at 5),
which meant the sun was low over the river. This made it difficult to pick out
the midstream eddies, and to identify the lines through the rapids.

Led a small group on a flatwater paddle down Mahinapua Creek, from Lake
Mahinapua down the Creek to the road bridge at Takutai. (3 hours).
I led a trip down Mahinapua Creek
from Shanghai Bay at Lake Mahinapua, down to the Lake Outlet creek, all the way
down to the road bridge at Takatai. There was only one section with any
current, so we were essentially paddled the whole way down.

Raining throughout the day.
Rolling session at the Hokitika Pool. (2 hours).
I provided some kayak rolling
instruction and feedback to two kayakers at the Hokitika Community Pool.
Focussed on Sweep Rolls and minor adjustments to rolling technique. I also organized
the location and logistics associated to the rolling session.
